This is the closest comparison we publish, and the one where we lose the most rows. Bark is not a surveillance product with a privacy problem — it has a considered position of its own, and on price, device count and hardware it is straightforwardly the stronger buy. The disagreement is narrow, and it is about one thing: whether anything should read your child’s messages at all.

Different philosophy
Nothing scans message content. There is no tier, plan or setting that turns it on — the capability does not exist in the product.
Bark Premium scans texts, email and social platforms with a classifier, then shows the parent only the content that triggered an alert. Ordinary conversations are never surfaced. Bark Jr does not scan content at all.

Two things are worth saying plainly before anything else.
First, Bark Jr does almost exactly what we do, for less money and with no device limit. Screen time, web filtering, location, no content scanning — at $49 a year for unlimited devices, against $69.90 for three of ours. If that is your whole requirement, the honest recommendation is to look hard at Bark Jr. It also tells you something: Bark reached the same conclusion we did about younger children, which is that content monitoring is not what they need.
Second, Bark Premium is not spyware, and describing it that way would be dishonest. It scans content with a classifier and then shows the parent only what was flagged — deliberately, so that ordinary conversations stay private. That is a real attempt at the same problem we are trying to solve, and it lands somewhere reasonable. It is a different line from ours, not a lower one.
And it buys something we cannot offer. Bark Premium can surface bullying, grooming, self-harm and suicidal ideation inside private messages. SmartProtect cannot see any of that, because it does not read messages. Our own writing names those as precisely the situations where closer visibility is justified. A parent with a live, specific worry of that kind should weigh that seriously, and may well be better served by Bark.
What we offer instead is a firm limit: nothing reads your child’s messages, on any plan, and there is no version of the product where that changes. Some families want the classifier. Some want the guarantee that no classifier exists. Both are defensible; they are not the same product.
Bark’s own site blocks automated retrieval, so unlike our other comparisons the pricing here could not be read directly from it. The figures below were cross-checked across several independent sources that agreed, and are stated as of the reviewed date — treat them as approximate and confirm on Bark’s site before buying.
