There is a real difference between knowing your child arrived at school and watching a dot move across a map all afternoon. This is built for the first, and deliberately not for the second.
Draw a zone around home, school, a grandparent's house or a training ground. These are the places where arrival and departure actually mean something, and where a notification saves you a text asking whether they got there.
You are notified when a zone is entered or left. This is the useful signal — 'arrived at school, 8:42' answers the question you actually had, without a continuous feed you would then feel obliged to watch.
The child device shows that location protection is on and which zones exist. Nothing about this is concealed, which is what separates it from tracking.

For a younger child, zone alerts are straightforwardly reassuring. For a sixteen-year-old, persistent location awareness is worth revisiting — the question is whether it still buys safety or has become habit.
Location tells you where a device is, which is not the same as where your child is — phones get left behind, lent out and run out of battery. Accuracy varies with GPS conditions, and indoors or in dense city centres it can be off by a considerable margin. Treat a zone event as useful information rather than proof, and never as a substitute for asking.
Yes. The child device shows that location protection is active and which safe zones are set. There is no hidden or covert location mode, and there is no plan that adds one.
Zone monitoring uses the low-power geofencing built into iOS and Android rather than polling GPS continuously, so the impact is small. Checking live location on demand uses more, which is another reason the design favours zone events.
Typically within a few tens of metres outdoors with a clear sky. Accuracy degrades indoors, underground and among tall buildings, so zones are best drawn slightly generously.
They can revoke the operating-system permission — both Apple and Google deliberately make that possible, and no app can prevent it. If that happens you are notified that location reporting has stopped, so it does not fail quietly.
Retention follows your plan's history window — 24 hours on Starter, 7 days on Pro and 30 days on Family Guardian — after which it is deleted.
